Exploring the area

Lisle sur tarn

Lisle-sur-Tarn, a 13th century bastide set in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards, enjoys a privileged location halfway between Toulouse and Albi. A square with arcades, unique in the south west, countryside which combines forest, plain and vineyard, make the bastide of Lisle-sur-Tarn a delightful and welcoming spot.

What is a bastide?

The bastides in the Tarn and Albigeois areas are evidence of conscious town planning which took into account the steep hill-sites, and indeed actively sought out such sites so as to construct fortified towns. A feeling of insecurity was still very much a sign of the times.

Bastides were also seats of power as well as commercial centres.

The Raymond Lafage Museum

This public museum houses a collection of graphic art on the work of Raymond Lafage, 17th designer from Lisle. Also worth seeing is the exhibition of Grésigne glassware, the archaeological and art collections.

The Art of Chocolate Museum

The passion which inspires Michel Thomaso-Defos and the sculptures of Casimir Ferrer combine to make an unusual and entertaining experience, with the exhibition of chocolate sculptures, a videotheque, art gallery and shop.
