A little history...

In 1355, the English armies devastated the valley of the Vère. Montmiral was protected by ramparts with four gates, of which only the Guarrics gate remains...
In 1446, the castle, built at the same time as the bastide, was restored by the d’Armagnac family. It was demolished in 1819 after becoming very delapidated.
During the Wars of Religion, which raged especially in this region, Montmiral gave shelter and protection to the Catholics of Gaillac who had been expelled from their town by the Protestants.
In January 1586, Montmiral repulsed an attack by 800 Huguenots led by Peyrole de Bruniquel.
On 24 June 1622, on his way to Toulouse, Louis XIII, after subduing Saint Antonin, stopped at Montmiral and lodged in the Maison de Tonnac.
In 1628, plague ravaged the city.
There are several places to explore: the arcades on the square, the town hall, the Maison Bozat, remains of the Maison Tonnac, the Toulze tower, the walk along the Pradel and Notre Dame church.

At Castelnau de Montmiral

Built in 1222 by Raymond VII Count of Toulouse, this fortified village “ancestor of the bastides” is a group of very old houses built close together along narrow streets around a central square. Castelnau de Montmiral means New Castle of the Mountain from where you can see (“mirar” = to see, in Occitan).

The castle of Mayragues

Nestling in a protected wooded valley, the castle of Mayragues, built in the 14th 15th and 16th centuries, is one of the only surviving examples of regional fortified architecture.

More information

Nestling in a protected wooded valley, the castle of Mayragues, built in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, is one of the only surviving examples of regional fortified architecture; it has a half timbered gallery and corbelled construction, on top of a stone structure, which functioned as a pathway to patrol the castle (chemin de ronde).

Beside it is a picturesque dove cote, with columns, in the Languedoc style, from which, in centuries gone by, the waste product served as manure for the vines. It was in a state of complete abandonment when the present owners took it on in 1980, and their patient works of restoration, in sympathy with the tradition of the place, were rewarded in 1998 by the Grand Prix of Old French Houses. The castle is listed as an Historic Monument and is open to the public on National Heritage Days.
